488. Migaloo

A typical example how a warm-up sketch can turn into a final drawing when it just clicks, and I can’t stop. I am trying to study whales for my next semi self-commissioned drawing.

Migaloo is an adult white male humpback whale, estimated to have been born in 1986. More information can be found here. We used his name for a project at work, for it’s uniqueness and it being a mammal. All our projects are related to animals or the animal kingdom.

I sketched this first with broad strokes, looking at the overall shape. I used a Croquis 6B to get from overall to more detailed shapes focusing on the curves and shadows. I switched to a Bruynzeel 6B pencil to introduce texture and more contrast in the whale and background. In the end I used my ~20 year old Pentel 0.5mm mechanical pencil with a B filling to go even finer for the last emphasis. From big to small, to finer details.

I am worn out, and I didn’t even start on the actual commission 😅
